I read my first book for the Hub Challenge this weekend! Whoo!
Book One: Wonder Show by Hannah Barnaby
I definitely enjoyed Barnaby’s story of Portia, a young girl who gets dropped off at a Home for Wayward Girls in 1930s America. Portia is a spitfire, and I loved her courage and individuality. The story follows Portia as she escapes from the home to try and find her father, who left her in the care of her aunt years before. Portia joins a carnival, working with the “freak show”: the bearded woman, the fat lady, the strong man, conjoined twins, the tallest man in the world… Based on real people from the time period, each member of the carnival rings true and has depth, sometimes shown through the smallest details in Barnaby’s tightly written tale. – Ms. Etchison
